Alcoholism treatment differs from one facility to another Despite the fact that alcoholism is a disabling disorder which ravages the individual at the emotional, mental, and physical levels, it is viewed as a treatable condition or disease. The downside to this is that there are now dozens of addiction treatment and recovery facilities throughout the US today to choose from when you need help. This presents a considerable challenge to the alcoholic who is sincerely reaching out for help and wants to rid their bodies of this debilitating substance. When a person has admitted that they (or a loved one) is having alcohol dependency issues and have finally decided to get help with their situation, the challenge of selecting the right addiction treatment and recovery can become an extremely frustrating process. Many individuals give up hope as a result and do nothing. As a result, many will develop chronic medical conditions or alcohol related diseases that could eventually kill them if they don't get the help that they need. Short-term vs. long-term alcohol treatment Whether it is the traditional addiction treatment and recovery center or one of the more innovative, alternative facilities, alcoholism rehab programs are typically classified as being either in-patient or out-patient programs. The in-patient alcohol treatment program is a residential format that enables the addicted individual to be treated and recover in a setting that is more home-like and provides them with certain amenities they would have at home. Additionally, in-patient programs are broken down into short-term and long-term stay. As the names imply, they relate to the amount of time that the individual is in residency at the facility they are recovering in. Short-term stay programs can be as brief as 14 days whereas long-term alcohol treatment programs can endure for up to 4 months, depending on how severe the addiction is and how long they have had a dependency problem. Detox and prescribed medications may need to be administered in the short-term stay programs whereas they are inevitable in long-term alcohol treatment.
